British Virgin Islands #BVIstrong fundraiser raises over £57,000 for Hurricane Irma relief fund

London, Wednesday 22 November 2017: The British Virgin Islands Tourism Board hosted the #BVIstrong fundraiser at The Roof Gardens, Kensington on 21 November 2017 to raise funds for the BVIs in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. The event played host to notable travel partners such as Caribtours, The Moorings and Sunsail as well as Sam Branson.

Hurricane Irma caused widespread damage in September 2017, leaving a catastrophic trail of destruction for residents including no electricity and running water for several days. Classified as a Category 5 Hurricane, Irma devastated the islands including Tortola, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda - causing millions of dollars’ worth of damage.

The fundraiser raised over £57,775 for the BVI’s relief fund through ticket sales, a raffle with prizes donated from friends of the BVI and an auction led by Caribtours MD Paul Cleary.

Guests were treated to performances, canapés, and rum cocktails whilst DJ – spun the decks. Ginny Hawksley, Managing Consultant, BVITB said: “We have been so overwhelmed with the continued support and generosity from travel partners and the British public. There is still a lot of work to do but it is important to take stock of everything that has been achieved in such a short space of time, whilst looking to the journey ahead of us to ensure all islands are equipped to host visitors in the upcoming months.”

Other organisations in attendance were One Love BVI, the charitable non-profit organisation which supports the long-term recovery of the BVIs in response to Hurricane Irma.
